History:
"Born in Genoa and of humble parentage, he is widely recognised as the discoverer of America, although he would never know this. He conceived the idea of reaching India by crossing the ocean in a westerly direction. So it was that during the night of 11-12 October 1492 the cry of 'Land!' went up from La Pinta, and the crew disembarked at dawn on an island in the Bahamas which Columbus named San Salvador."
